Using language games in the classroom
Most games classroom english games have four stages:
1. Rules of the game
Generally, the best way of getting the students to understand how game is played is not to explain the rules but to play trial round with the students.
2. Choosing sides
The games in Classroom English Games can be played in the following ways:
a. Player A vs Player B. Here each person in the class plays againts each other.
b. Small team vs Small team. Here the class divided up into a number of small teams.
c. Team A vs Team B. Here the class is divided into two teams.
d. You vs the class. Here you (or individual students in turn) play againts the rest of the class)
Some games are best played in one particular way, in others you can be more flexible, if the students organise themselves into teams, make sure that not all the best students end up in the same team.
3. Playing the game
In games involving team discussion, stress to your students that working language should, as far as possible, be English.
4. Correction
While game is being played, any correction of mistakes should be done in as unobtrusive a way as possible so as not to distract from the game.
5. Follow up
The purpose of this stage is to focus the students attention on the main language points practiced in the game. At this stage, any mistakes made during the game can be corrected and any new vocabulary written up.
